    The functions of visual management

    Visual Management has been evolving and effectively employed in some manufacturing and service organisations for a long time. In order to facilitate a cross-industrial learning process and to advance in detailed research the understanding of how the Visual Management concept may serve in an organisation is necessary. The aim of this paper is to identify Visual Management functions and the theoretical base for the construction industry. A detailed literature review and an analysis of the findings were performed accordingly. The necessity of a holistic approach in order to make more use of the Visual Management process and some research opportunities were identified

    Process transparency on construction sites : examples from construction companies in Brazil

    Process transparency is the core concept in Visual Management (VM), which is one of the founding blocks of the Toyota Production System. This paper presents the preliminary results of a collaborative research conducted between Brazil and the UK, as part of a research effort focused on the application of Visual Management in construction. How process transparency is realized on construction sites is the main research question of the paper. The use of this concept and the implementation of the transparency theory were investigated through multiple case studies, carried out in nine different construction companies. The findings are explained through six theoretical transparency increasing approaches. The affecting parameters in the application of, the management’s perception of and several methods in process transparency in construction were identified. Further work, especially exploring the functions of process transparency on construction sites and reflecting the worker perception of the issue, is necessary to elaborate the process transparency concept

    hI-con1, a factor VII-IgGFc chimeric protein targeting tissue factor for immunotherapy of uterine serous papillary carcinoma

    BACKGROUND: Uterine serous papillary adenocarcinoma (USPC) is a highly aggressive variant of endometrial cancer. Human immunoconjugate molecule (hI-con1) is an antibody-like molecule targeted against tissue factor (TF), composed of two human Factor VII (fVII) as the targeting domain, fused to human immunoglobulin (Ig) G1 Fc as an effector domain. We evaluated hI-con1 potential activity against primary chemotherapy-resistant USPC cell lines expressing different levels of TF. METHODS: A total of 16 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded USPC samples were evaluated by immunohistochemistry (IHC) for TF expression. Six primary USPC cell lines, half of which overexpress the epidermal growth factor type II (HER2/neu) receptor at 3\ufe levels, were assessed by flow cytometry and real-time PCR for TF expression. Sensitivity to hI-con1-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (IDCC) was evaluated in 5-hour-chromium release assays. Finally, to investigate the effect of interleukin-2 (IL-2) on IDCC, 5-h 51Cr assays were also conducted in the presence of low doses of IL-2 (i.e., 50\u2013100 IU ml 1). RESULTS: Cytoplasmic and/or membrane TF expression was observed in all 16 (100%) USPC samples tested by IHC, but not in normal endometrium. High expression of TF was found in 50% (three out of six) of the USPC cell lines tested by real-time PCR and flow cytometry when compared with normal endometrial cells (NECs; Po0.001). Uterine serous papillary adenocarcinoma cell lines overexpressing TF, regardless of their high or low HER2/neu expression, were highly sensitive to IDCC (mean killing\ub1s.d., 65.6\ub13.7%, range 57.5\u201377.0%, Po0.001), although negligible cytotoxicity against USPC was seen in the absence of hI-con1 or in the presence of Rituximab control antibody. The addition of low doses of IL-2 further increased the cytotoxic effect induced by hI-con1 against chemotherapy-resistant USPC. CONCLUSION: hI-con1 induces strong cytotoxicity against primary chemotherapy-resistant USPC cell lines overexpressing TF. The hI-con1 may represent a novel therapeutic agent for the treatment of patients harbouring advanced, recurrent and/or metastatic USPC refractory to standard treatment modalities

    Visual management : an exploration of the concept and its implementation in construction

    Visual Management (VM) is the managerial strategy of employing visual (sensory) tools and aids in close-range communication at a workplace to increase the self-management ability of the workforce. It is an important element of the Toyota Production System (TPS), contributing to the reduction of waste and variability in the production system. The Visual Management strategy increases transparency and pervasive information availability in a work setting. Along with increased information availability, transparency and better information flow, neat, orderly and transparent work settings can help improve the image of the construction industry. The objective of this thesis is to better understand the implementation of Visual Management in construction. The objective was explored through the research questions in three stages. The first stage relates to the theoretical constitution of the subject through a synthesis of the literature review, addressing the research question of what Visual Management is. The second stage of the research was conducted to investigate the state-of-the-art implementation of Visual Management in construction, employing the case study research methodology at nine Brazilian construction companies. In order to understand the level of Visual Management on conventional construction sites, the final stage of the research was conducted in Finland, using the case study research methodology and a survey. The functions of Visual Management, the role of Visual Management in other managerial activities, the implementation methods and characteristics of the Visual Management strategy in construction, the conditions of Visual Management on conventional construction sites are some of the findings of the research. The future Visual Management research and implementation opportunities in construction are also discussed
